If you aren’t absolutely disgusted by this metaphor, keep reading. If you are, I don’t give a shit (pun intended).

There are two major information overload reduction strategies that most people overlook.

  1. Discarding useless shit and eliminating the non-essential
  2. Offloading what’s on their mind by externalizing it.

Let’s talk about how to do this.

You Take out The Trash to Keep Your House Clean

Say that you don’t take the trash out for weeks.

  • Your house will smell horrible.
  • The trash might attract rodents, roaches and god only knows what else.
  • And everyone who lives with you will hate you.

The difference between digital and physical trash is that you have near infinite space for the latter and it’s usually out of sight, but not out of mind.

I don’t know about you, but the overwhelmingly of what’s in my physical mailbox is junk mail.
