Your Brain is Not a Computer
One of the key themes of her research is the metaphor of the brain as a computer. This metaphor has been incredibly powerful and pervasive, but it also has its limitations. By focusing on the narrow kind of intelligence exhibited by computers, it leaves out the wellsprings of human intelligence. Murphy suggests that this has been a tragic oversight and that we need to look for ways to tap into the wellsprings of human intelligence.
One way to do this is through the practice of mindfulness meditation, specifically the body scan technique. This technique involves focusing attention on whatever sensations are arising in the body and making it a regular practice. This helps to open up the internal world and tap into the flow of sensations that lies beneath the surface.
